OUR TOWN

Menindee is located on the Darling River 110km south east from Broken Hill and has a population of approximately 700 people. Menindee is traditionally home to the Barkindji people.

Menindee is a tiny outback settlement which is famous for two things: it was the last place where the Burke and Wills expedition stayed before heading north into the unchartered outback and the Menindee Lakes are an inland wonderland and a vital source of water for the surrounding citrus orchards and vegetable farms.

The main industry is horticulture; the leading crops are stone fruits, grapes and cotton.  During the summer months the population increases with itinerant cotton chippers, fruit pickers and tourists. Industry has steadily been declining since declining amounts of water have been available from the river system.

Menindee is surrounded by some 20 lakes and the stunning Kinchega National Park, making it a perfect base to enjoy walking, swimming and camping.
